The Highwaymen were black artists who painted beautiful landscapes of Florida in the 1950s here in Fort Pierce and sold them from their car trunks. There were 26 original Highwaymen and they painted on cheap wall board framing their work with door and baseboard molding. Some of their work now sells for thousands and is displayed in the Florida Governor's Mansion and the White House. There is a Highwayman Heritage Trail commemorating this history including this beautiful 20-foot obelisk on Avenue D.
