Avenue of the Oaks leading to the Coffin Point Plantation on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. This is a historic plantation located in the Frogmore area of Beaufort County. It grew Sea Island cotton and was owned by Ebenezer Coffin. It was built in 1801 in the Federal style and is the Register of Historic Places.During the Civil War 260 people were recorded as being enslaved there. It was captured by Union Troops in 1861 and the family fled. The government developed a plan to educate the newly freed slaves to prove their effectiveness as laborers. The effort was known as the Port Royal Experiment. A group of Missionaries from the North known as Giddeonites offered literacy education and wages for land cultivation. The house was purchased in early 1890 by Senator James Donald Cameron (R-PA), a former Secretary of War.
