Chuck-wills'-widow

Posted by
Fran (Ft Pierce FL, United States) on 3 January 2025 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

Chuck-wills-widow is a nocturnal bird in the Nightjar family. It is hard to find because it sleeps on a branch in dim light and looks like a brown lump. One had been spotted in Green Cay in Delray, Florida. Since it would be a "life bird" for my husband, we had to drive down there and see if we could find it. Fortunately, we did. Its strange name is an onomatopoeia from the bird's song.
